Best Overall Value - Luxury
Best Car Value Over $23,000

  • 2005 Lexus LS 430
  • IntelliChoice (May, 2005)

Lexus has defined modern automotive luxury since the brand's 1989 launch, and the LS car line has carried the mantle of quality and refinement for three model generations. The current LS is fresh off a 2004 update, which brought a subtle exterior freshening, numerous detail refinements and a high-tech Pre-Collision System (PCS), which can help reduce accident severity. An amazing advance over traditional safety devices, PCS uses a millimeter-wave radar to detect obstacles, then judges based on vehicle speed, steering angle and yaw rate inputs whether it should preemptively tighten the front seatbelts. As part of a total safety system, PCS also communicates with Brake Assist to prepare it for rapid application of the anti-lock brakes. The safety system also incorporates Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), tire-pressure monitor, High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps with auto-levelers and adaptive turn-in function, and front, front side, front knee, and side curtain airbags. Such attention to detail is also evident in other features: automatic climate controls that compensate for the sun; laser or radar cruise control; rear backup camera; height-adjustable air suspension; and creamy smooth V8 engine. With an interior sized like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class', and a feature roster to rival that of Europe's finest, the Lexus LS is priced more like the smaller, eight-cylinder E-Class. Offering more content and refinement than higher-priced competitors, the LS is a solid blue-chip investment, once again winning the segment's Best Overall Value award.
