GX Named Four Wheeler Of The Year, Second Year In A Row

  • 2004 Lexus GX 470
  • Four Wheeler magazine (February, 2004)

There's an honored ritual that takes place every day at Lexus. A recently introduced vehicle is parked in one of the design buildings and surrounded by scores of engineers. A few moments are taken to appreciate the advances and innovations that have been introduced, and then the vehicle is relentlessly picked apart. Using customer feedback and a critical eye, the very same people who proudly designed the vehicle question every aspect of it and continue until they figure out some way, any way, to improve upon it.

This philosophy of continuous improvement is called Kaizen, and it's the guiding principle at Lexus. It empowers everyone--whether an engineer or an assembly line worker--to constantly look for ways to improve our vehicles. Some improvements will be small. Others will be giant leaps. But each will get us closer to our goal of automotive perfection.

One of our most significant improvements concerns our refined, adventurous and luxurious Lexus GX. Last year, the 2003 GX was named Four Wheeler of the Year by Four Wheeler magazine. [1] Given the nature of our commitment to Kaizen, we immediately started looking for ways to make the 2004 version of this premier luxury utility vehicle win the award a second time.

The biggest innovation we introduced in the 2004 GX was an ingenious suspension idea: the available Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS). It offers the best of both worlds: increased wheel travel to help provide better traction off-road, and stiffer sway bars to help reduce body sway and improve handling on-road. All while retaining the luxury ride qualities that the Lexus GX is known for. The technology behind KDSS can help you navigate a rough mountain road with finesse, and make you look forward to curvy roads like never before.

The GX also comes with a truly luxurious interior, full-time four-wheel drive, Downhill Assist Control (DAC) [2] to help prevent side slippage as the GX progresses down a slope, Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) [3] to help improve control during hill climbing as well as starting and stopping on slippery surfaces, and an available DVD rear-seat entertainment system. So it's not all that surprising that the GX achieved our goal of being named Four Wheeler of the Year [4] for the second consecutive time.

As you can see, "The Passionate Pursuit of Perfection" is more than just words. Lexus has always been about relentless innovation, and we're proud that our people consistently find ways to take our vehicles to the next level.

Our commitment to Kaizen helps ensure that when you purchase a Lexus, every aspect of that vehicle is as good as it can possibly be. The way we see it, if we make sure that we're never completely satisfied with our vehicles, Lexus owners will always be completely satisfied with theirs.

[2] Downhill Assist Control (DAC) is a complex electronic and mechanical system designed to help the driver maintain vehicle control and speed on steep, downhill descents. It is not a substitute for safe driving judgment and practices. Factors including speed, grade, surface conditions and driver input can all affect whether DAC will be effective in preventing a loss of control. Please see your Owner's Manual for further details.
[3] Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) is a complex electronic and mechanical system designed to help minimize backward rolling on steep ascents. It is not a substitute for safe driving judgment and practices. Factors including grade, surface conditions and driver input can all affect whether HAC will be effective in preventing a loss of control. Please see your Owner's Manual for further details.
