  Bob Shacochis won the National Book Award for First Fiction in 1986, for his short story collection Easy in the Islands. He wrote two more acclaimed works of fiction, the collection The Next New World (1990) and the novel Swimming in the Volcano (1993), as well as four nonfiction books. Shacochis is a contributing editor for Outside and Harper’s.
